Interview with the Founder of Wisdom

By Ashley Pierson

Spectrum Labs is happy to announce one of the panelists for the Masterclass on January 20th, Dayo Akinrinade, Founder of Wisdom!

Meet Dayo Akinrinade!

Dayo is the founder of Wisdom. Wisdom is an audio community that connects knowledge-seekers to mentors. Dayo’s journey in tech started as an IT Management Consultant at Accenture and Deloitte. Then, driven by the lack of diversity in London’s tech ecosystem, Dayo joined the founding team of OneTech, London’s largest diversity in startups program, backed by the JP Morgan Chase Foundation. Subsequently, after spotting a gap in the market, she went on to found Africlick, a cultural dating app targeting 1 billion Africans globally. In 2019 she was named in the Financial Times Top 100 Most Influential Ethnic Minority Leaders in Tech. Dayo holds a B.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of Manchester and a M.Sc. in Technology from University College London.

1. Can you tell me more about Wisdom?

Wisdom is an audio community which connects knowledge-seekers to mentors for one-on-one intimate conversations. The Wisdom app enables mentors to give live talks on a set topic and offer listeners timed slots to ask questions - all talks are recorded which enables listeners to playback talks in their own time.

2. What are you most excited about the masterclass on January 20th?

Nothing is more important than the safety of the community. I am excited to collaborate with professionals working on the front line of audio moderation. Wisdom, of course, is brand new, so I expect to learn from the vast experience of both Spotify and Epic Spectrum Labs. Even though we are new, we have already established 24x7 human moderation and work on issues of device blocking and bad actor detection.  We look forward to continuing to build out sophisticated engines for abuse identification and prevention. I can’t wait to engage in a fascinating cross-fertilization of perspectives.

3. What do you think the audience will take away from the panel?

I hope the audience appreciates the complexity of moderating effectively in a real-time environment and realizes that any new app starting today must work on issues of moderation from day 1. Safety is not something to bolt on after an app is created; it must be part of the DNA of the earliest team. While the vast majority of any community is strong, the 1% who may be trolls or bad actors can be exceedingly disruptive if they are allowed to be. I hope the audience takes away that Wisdom cares about these issues deeply and is committed to solving them through a combination of human moderation, device blocking leveraging SafetyNet attestation on Android and device check on iOS, and also through applying advanced AI to help improve the human moderation response. I hope also the audience realizes that companies in this space share freely with each other because there can be no competing on safety; collaboration is essential. It takes an ecosystem of providers to properly police a real-time network.

4. Leave us in suspense about what you will talk about.

Learn how we dealt with a committed troll in our first 2 weeks of launch. It didn’t take long!
