Spectrum Labs is happy to announce one of the panelists for the Online Toxicity Masterclass on March 17th, Kesa White, Program Research Associate of PERIL!
Meet Kesa White!
Kesa White is a Program Research Associate at the Polarization and Extremism Research Innovation Lab (PERIL), located at American University. Washington, DC. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and a Master of Science degree in Terrorism and Homeland Security from American University. Her work focuses on violent extremism in online spaces and de-radicalization with a focus on homeland security.
Kesa’s interest in the far-right came after she was the victim of a hate crime. She realized that anyone can be a victim of a hate crime, and these are issues that must be studied to deter them. Since then, she has furthered her education and conducted research to develop her expertise in these subject areas in order to speak authoritatively on the far right. In the future, Kesa hopes to become a distinguished scholar and have a direct impact on policy making.
1. What are you most excited about the event?
I’m excited to hear from the other panelists, answering questions from T&S individuals, and the other attendees of the event. I'm also looking forward to the professional networking opportunities.
2. What do you think the audience will take away from the panel?
I strongly believe the audience will learn more about the coded language that is frequently used by these groups, to avoid detection online, and expand their knowledge on how violent extremists manipulate technological spaces to further their ideological message and promote hate.
3. Leave us suspense about what you will talk about.
I’ll be focusing on how individuals will promote hate filled propaganda through their usernames and/or social media profile biography.
